Calligraphy

Calligraphy is such a beautiful and charming art.

It is also usually the first thing foreign people would think about when it comes to "Chinese."

And this makes it the regular activity we've offered to our students every year.

When it comes to Chinese New Year, the first image coming to mind is the shining red of Chinese couplets which are pasted onto every house's doors and windows.

And this is what we are going to do this time!

Master's work

Chinese characters can be displayed in different forms/styles: regular script, seal script, etc.

Starting from the practice of character strokes, students learned to write their own couplets shortly -- such quick learners!!

How many scripts can you tell from their work?

At Chinese New Year's Eve, wish these couplets brought everyone who participated in this activity and those who read this article good luck and fortune for new year!

* 春聯 Chinese couplets:

Chinese people write words of good meanings on red paper and paste it on doors/windows, expecting for good luck and fortune for the new year.

Chinese couplets usually go in pairs with 7 characters on each piece of paper, but sometimes we also call those unpaired ones with only 1 or 4 characters as Chinese couplets, just like the ones our students made this time.

These unpaired ones are also used for doors and windows, even for some household containers such as refrigerators, money saver, rice keepers, etc. -- for example, pasting the character "滿" (man3, being full) on refrigerator means people who live in this house will never lack of food, which also indicates their good life of fortune and wealth.

* The Chinese couplets in the photo above:

"福" (fu2) -- good fortune

"春" (chun1) -- spring

"平安" (ping2 an1) -- safety

"十全十美" (shi2 quan2 shi2 mei3) -- perfectness
